The Mythical Legends and Lore of the Mermaids

Mermaids, on occasion also called sirens, are fabled creatures who theoretically live in the seas around the world. Mermaids top half looks like a striking woman with long hair and from the waist down they retain the body of a fish.

Sailors and fishermen have told stories of seeing mermaids for centuries; the original sightings were made in Assyria around 1000BC. The prevalent image of a mermaid is sitting on a rock, flattered by her beauty in a mirror.

However to lots of seafarers catching a glimpse of a mermaid gave them bad luck, an omen of a storm or shipwreck. Merfolk are responsive creatures, although not high in intelligence. They are human like above the waist, merging into a sturdy fish-tail below. Merfolk have no extraordinary occupations or abilities, preferring to expend most of their life swimming, hunting, eating, preening, mating, and playing. They slumber hovering with their nostrils on top of water in huge pods, habitually in a sheltered bay or in the ledges of great rocks. Merfolk have a gill system like to that of a normal fish – slits in the neck region of the mermaids are lined with a rich greenish membrane which filters the oxygen content of the water precisely into the copper-based blood system of the mer-person. The nostrils join to the gill system through tubes in the neck area of the mermaid, this system thus allowing them to sleep in a stationary position while still thus allowing airflow through the gills. Some Mermaids ‘tether’ themselves with pieces of kelp so that they do not drift away from the pod.
